Oil-oiled type distribution transformers are transformers that change the input and output voltages at desired ratios up to 36 kV voltage level and 5000 kVa power, where the heat generated during operation is removed by transformer oil and cooling is provided by transformer oil in order not to exceed the permitted operating temperature. These types of transformers can be examined under 2 (two) main headings as hermetic and expansion tank:
25 – 5000 kVA power range, up to 36 kV high voltage level, three or single phase, oil lubricated, natural cooling (ONAN), with idle tap changer or automatic tap changer under load, can be used both externally and internally. Hermetic oil type distribution transformers are manufactured with the principles of balancing the oil pressure and atmospheric pressure at the desired temperature by filling oil under vacuum and preventing the cooling oil from contacting the atmosphere.
In hermetic oil type distribution transformers, internal heat as a result of changing oil pressure due to thermal changes is controlled by natural expansion and contraction of the boiler wave walls. They are mechanically designed and manufactured to withstand these effects.
Hermetic oil type distribution transformers have lower height compared to expansion tank transformers. Therefore, they can be used in smaller areas.
Since the oil does not come into contact with the atmosphere in hermetic transformers, it does not require oil change in certain periods as in expansion tank transformers.
Transformers with expansion tanks have the same core and coil structure as hermetic transformers. The dimensions of the expansion tanks of this type of transformers are designed and manufactured as a result of calculations to store the expansion of the oil whose volume increases with temperature.
Since the transformers with expansion tanks are open to the atmosphere, the oil pressure changing due to thermal effects, the air exchange is provided by dehumidifying the air thanks to the clikajel (air dryer) in the transformer tank.
As a result of the air exchange caused by the temperature differences depending on the load of the transformer with the expansion tank put into operation, the clikajel loses its properties over time and causes the oil to moisturize and deteriorate its structure. For this reason, it is necessary to perform maintenance such as replacing the silica gel in certain periods and measuring the puncture voltage by taking samples from the oil.
